THE WHO

Backyards, thickets, and Freeman's Vineyard assure that a variety of muscadine grapes are available to the Upper Lowcountry region of South Carolina - especially to the persons in and around the City of Denmark.

OTHER POINTS

  • Historically, the muscadine was important to the Denmark area - an area having grown out of Colleton County, becoming a part of Barnwell County prior to it being Bamberg County.

  • Muscadines were used for food and trading by Native Nations, European Americans, and enslaved peoples.

  • Muscadines were found along routes throughout the area and were used for food and trading.

DENMARK COMMUNITY MOMENT

Detra Salley Bruce, aka The Grape Lady, sold muscadines in Walterboro, Orangeburg, and throughout Bamberg County.

The SC Upper Lowcountry Muscadine Festival is a Folklife festival partially funded by the Folklife grant of the SC Arts Commission
